Live Local: Wanderlust 108

IMG_0895-300x225Rain or shine (…or snow), we love our city! In fact, we love it so much that we created this blog segment, called ‘Live Local’, to share with you some of our favorite little gems located right in Edmonton. Whether it is restaurants, parks, boutiques or special events, we will spotlight them here with hopes to share community joy and promote local goodness.

On Saturday, BBS gathered a team of barretenders and barrestars to rock out at the Wanderlust 108 triathlon - the first triathlon of its kind to hit YEG. Throwing away all expectations of a vigorous, competitive sporting event, Wanderlust 108 shifts focus to community, inner peace and self-awareness.

IMG_6584-e1440965967167-225x300First up in this “mindful triathalon” was a 5K run/jog/walk, an hour and a half dedicated to lacing up our running shoes and hitting the pavement at Louise McKinney park. It was a beautiful day to take in the fresh air and summer scenery. Following the run was a 90-minute outdoor yoga experience. To open up our practice, Eoin Fin brought the blissful, surfer vibrations to share with us all the way from Santa Cruz, CA. This quickly turned into a dance party and ain’t no party like a barrestar dance party! To close us off, Edmonton’s own Myrah Penaloza, (co-founder of BLOOM Festival coming to the Windspear Centre on October 3&4, 2015) led a crowd of over fourteen hundred participants to bliss. The third leg of this triathlon was fashioned with the intention to integrate the previous two events through a guided meditation led by Kate Potter from Vancouver, BC. Accompanied by an improvisational cellist, Dirje Childs, Kate closed off the day and left all the participating wanderers with full hearts and peaceful minds.

2015-08-29-12.49.21-225x300 In addition to the three main events, Wanderlust had so much more to offer! From the sick beats of DJ Taz Rashid to the sounds of a brass band at the 5K finish line, music was live throughout the festival. Local boutiques and food sensations were set up throughout the Kula Market… even our friends from Glow Juicery were dishing out free samples at the event! Wanderlust (and other local vendors) also set up stations for acro yoga, slacklining, hula hooping, flower-crown making, body tribal painting, and so much more!

Our BBS team is extremely grateful for the many opportunities to participate in community events such as Wanderlust 108. If you’re interested in joining in on the fun with us, stay posted for more community events popping up soon!
