Live Local: 124 Grand Market

This week on the blog we’ve gone exploring the neighborhood. Just a few blocks away from of our new hoimage1.PNG-3-273x300me at Holland Plaza, local, sustainable, small businesses, farmers and vendors alike come together on Thursday evenings from 4:00pm – 8:00pm at the 124 Grand Market. Located on 124 st and 108 ave, the market features over 50 unique, local vendors, 4 delicious food trucks, and promotes local art talents by highlighting theatre and live music.

The market shakes things up by hosting different vendors every week. Prior to the market hours, you can check out who will be attendinimage2.PNG-4-300x298g weekly on their website. Vendors include everything from fresh, local produce to baked goods (shout out to Moonshine Doughnuts featured in the picture, YUM) to prepared gluten free, organic, vegan-friendly food. Farmers markets are a perfect opportunity to pick up your midweek groceries while supporting local farms and companies.FullSizeRender-4-243x300

124 grand market also hosts 4 different food trucks each week, providing the perfect dinner option for the after work, downtown cowd. Sailin’ on is Edmontons only vegan food truck and the fried avocado tacos are to die for! Little Village Food truck is also a regular at the Grand Market, dishing out authentic, delicious Greek food. Other food trucks include Drift Food Truck, Orbit Food Truck, and Land of a 1000 Dogs.

Upholding their values of community, the market also sets up community booths each week. Featuring places such as the Edmonton Public Library to hand out free library cards and The Canadian Western Bank to share their involvement with Big Brothers and Big Sisters! Local talents are featured each week by accommodating live musicians, artisan vendors, and theatre/dance performers.

Another unique feature of this market is their ‘Little Beans’ program. This program provides kids with the opportunity to get educated and fosters proper nourishment habits at a young age. Sign your little one up at the info booth and they will be provided with a token, which can be traded up for any fruit, vegetable, or plant-based product of their choice. Much like the underlying values of Barre Body Studio, 124 Grand Market cherishes community, health and wellness. We have a thing for farmers markets here at BBS; not only do we love nourishing our bodies with locally grown nutrients but we appreciate having a place for the community to gather and celebrate this beautiful city!

You only have ONE week left to catch the 124 Grand Market before it shuts down for the winter months. We have also attached a list of some of our other favourite markets in and around YEG, and their closing dates. Check them out!

Form Friday: Neutral Spine

Neutral-Spine-876x1024

We talk about it every class but finding and working in your Neutral Spine can be difficult. Here’s the low down on neutral spine and how to find it! Neutral spine is the natural position of the spine when all 3 curves of the spine — cervical (neck), thoracic (middle) and lumbar (lower) — are present and in good alignment. This is the strongest position for the spine when we are standing or sitting, and the one that we are made to move from. Knowing how to identify neutral spine is crucial for Barre Body Fit and will help you to get the most out of your classes. Simply, a neutral spine alignment is when the pelvis is balanced between the two exaggerated anterior and posterior positions. To become familiar with this position in your own body try lying on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Make sure that your legs are parallel with your heels, toes, knees, and hips all in one line. Let your arms rest at your sides. Relax your body, including your shoulders, neck, and jaw. Allow your back to rest on the floor, without effort. Your spine should have two areas that do not touch the mat underneath you: your neck and your lower back (the cervical spine and lumbar spine). These natural curves in your back function to absorb shock when you’re standing, running, jumping, or simply walking around town. When you sit, it’s important to maintain the natural curves in your spine to prevent lower back and neck strain.

Now place one hand one your rib cage ensuring your rib cage is closed. Breathe Deeply into your back and the sides of your rib cage, and all the way down to the pelvis. Exhale and use your abs to press your lower spine into the floor in a pelvic tuck. Inhale to release. Exhale and pull your lower spine up, away from the floor creating a pelvic tilt. Inhale to release. This exercise helps to feel the exaggerated positions of your spine that we want to avoid, so that we can find a balanced position.

Barre Favs: Local Hangout

cV_5-A1Dik5HAhLH1n8hYG2_mNCWqTCv2xBinwU1BFQ-300x300Aside from the mid-winter blizzards, Edmontonians have it pretty good. Not only do we live in a city colored with culture and we get to experience every season change to its most ample effect, we also have a pretty rad collection of delicious restaurants, charming parks, opulent galleries, oh yeah, and some pretty awesome fitness boutiques as well (nudge nudge). This week your barretenders are giving you the 411 on where you might catch them after dishing out that sweet burn at the barre! Check out our favorite local hangouts:

“My favorite local hang outs depend on what I’m doing. I love brunch and some of my favourite places to go get it are Culina at the Muttart, Blue Plate Diner and Under the High Wheel. If I’m going out for drinks then you might find me at Underground, Next Act Pub or Cask and Barrel.” - Erin

“I’d have to say that the Strathcona Farmers Market is my jam! I always look forward to my weekly trips to Whyte on Saturday mornings to pick up my kale and chickie dough. But Café Tiramisu on 124th ave and MKT Beer Market on Whyte ave are up there on my list too!” – Katarina

“My back deck on my lounge chair with a good book and cold beverage :).  Famoso Pizza is also great for quick yummy food and treats - mmmmm gelato :)”   - Erika

“My fiancé and I agreed that we would try a new restaurant every time we decide to eat out because we find ourselves at Joey South Common lounge A LOT (still our fav).”   - Lindsey

Anywhere that sells a decent latte. I love Transcend and I recently discovered the cutest little café called Café Bicyclette that I will be supporting more frequently.” – Mary Jo

“The Bend in Terwilleger. Little bar off the beaten track.”  - Kirsten

“Duchess Bake Shop. It is a great place to catch up with friends, and everything there is delicious.” – Katharine

“My local hang out is definitely Terwillegar Dog Park, I am there at least 4 times a week if not more.  Watching the dogs frolic and play in the water is so adorable. My golden retriever puppy had his first summer this year and learnt how to swim there so it's kind of been our spot ever since. “ – Charlotte

“Depends on the season for me! We love going on walks through the river valley when the weather is nice. During winter, snowshoeing is more our thing. “ –Elissa

"W.C Tubby Bateman Park (or Tubby Park) is definitely a favourite for my family! It is tucked right down by the Mill Creek Ravine and has so much charm to it, with lots of community toys that have been left for kids to play with. It’s also a great place for picnics, with lots of green space to spread out." - Kristin

Barrestars, we want to hear where you go out to play! Share your favorite local hangout with us on either Facebook (Barre Body Studio Edmonton) or Twitter (@barrebodyyeg).

Form Friday: Water Ski

FormFriday_WaterSki-576x1024Water Ski is the queen-bee of multitasking! This tough position will trim and shape your inner and outer thighs, and create definition in your glutes, but it doesn’t stop there! Your upper body is being challenged to create that diagonal shape. Your body is supported entirely by your shoulder, arm and core strength – all of which are being sculpted throughout the series. Use these tips to get the most out of your Water Ski!

Facing the barre with the hips touching the barre. Come into a rise with the heels squeezing together. With a strong grip, pull away from the barre with straight arms. Bend through the knees, squeeze the glutes and lift the hips up towards the barre. The body will create a 45-degree angle from the chest to knees. Lift your gaze and engage the core. Now lets move. As you lower through your plié keep the knees tracking over the toes and engage the inner thighs and quads. Lifting through plié, tuck the hips up to the barre by engaging the glutes and hamstrings.

#WomanCrushWednesday - Instructor Spotlight: Katharine

00000578-683x1024 Why do you barre so hard?

I barre so hard to keep this booty looking as good as it does.

Any advice for the barre stars in your class?

Just keep pushing through it. Challenge yourself. Breathe.

What is your favorite move @ the barre?

My favorite move at the barre would have to be the sideline series. There are so many movement patterns and add on options in this series! It works those side glutes so good…and the outer thighs…and the abs…it works everything and is super challenging ???? Sideline is by far my fave.

How did you get introduced to barre?

My best friend Vic started going to barre classes with Megan at the first Edmonton location down town, after our friend Justine introduced them to her (Shout out to Victoria Richards and Justine Ulan). Vic knew my dance background and took me to a class with her. I instantly fell in love with barre and continued going to classes, which led to me instructing

Tell us something that we don’t know about you!

Something you might not know is that I auditioned to be on the last season of Big Brother Canada but didn’t make it because they said I’m too well rounded. I’m obviou sly too cool for reality TV haha ???? …just kidding, I’ll try again next year. Also, I have a hamster named Brie Cheese

FullSizeRender-300x293If you could choose any job what would it be?

If I could, I would be Britney Spears. I’m convinced that would be the best job in the world. Yup, I’d live her life in a heart beat.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what would you bring with you?

That’s easy. I’d bring a fully staffed Starbucks.

Barre Favs: Road Trip Playlist

Barre-favs-roadtripplaylist-300x200Do you ever find yourself tucking to the beat in your car? (Good – then we aren’t the only ones.) With summer slowly winding down and the long weekend quickly approaching, you are probably packing up for a few final camping excursions and road trips. Your BBS team is offering up some sweet soundtracks for your next summer adventure. Check out what we are listening to and get moving to that new road trip playlist!

“What ever is playing on Spotify or Songza for the new upbeat dance music!  This summer had a lot of KPop as well as I was in South Korea for the first half of summer.” – Erika

“My summer 2015 road trip playlist is basically Florence and the Machine's new album (Which Witch is amazing) and Sam Hunt's new album (House Party). Usually on shuffle so that it is mixed up and doesn't get too boring, sometimes I like to throw in a little Jason Derulo (Try Me and Love Me Down) just to keep things interesting.” –Charlotte

“I am in love with Hilary Duff's new album (Breathe In. Breathe Out.) and have been listening to it in my car all summer. Other than that, old Taylor Swift and Shania Twain albums are a must on long road trips.” – Katharine

“My typical jams are usually along the lines of Sam Smith, Mumford and Sons, Arctic Monkeys and (my fav) John Mayer. But confession time… N.W.A’s greatest hits have been bumpin’ in my car for the past two weeks… Most definitely my road trip playlist of choice at the moment." –Katarina

“I’m known for my really random playlists. I just like to have a bunch of up beat music when I go road tripping so I can dance around in the car. You’ll find my playlists will go from Pitbull to AC/DC and then a little ABBA to some David Guetta.” – Erin

“I might be the only one to pull out my old case of CDs, instead of playing my road trip tunes on my iPhone. That means anything from Queen’s greatest hits, to country to any song from the 90’s.” – Amanda

“I’m not going to lie – I am a HUGE fan of Bruno Mars. Uptown Funk – I sing along with it, I dance to it, I just can’t help it! I also love some Vance Joy if I need some more Zen.” - Kyra

"Everything from Taylor Swift, to Metallica, Eric Clapton to Reba." - Kirsten

We are wishing you safe travels and a whole lot of sunshine this long weekend – see you at the barre!
