#WomanCrushWednesday - Instructor Spotlight: Julia

 

Why do you barre so hard? I love barre because it is a well rounded workout with physical and mental benefits. Coming from a dance background, I was really missing a workout that challenged me both mentally andIMG_3401-683x1024 physically in the way that dance did. I find that barre works similar muscles and requires an awareness of the body like a ballet class helping you to find that mind-body connection and stay present in your workout.

What advice do you have for the barrestars in your class?  Barre is your opportunity to devote that entire 45, 60 or 75 minutes of class to yourself. When things get tough remind yourself of what brought you to class in the first place - be it for a challenging workout, taking a break from a busy day or to be inspired by your fellow barrestars. Stay present, remember to breathe and have fun with it!

What keeps you inspired and motivated?  I am inspired and motivated by the amazing community of barrestars that show up to the studio every day. Everyone (clients and staff) is so welcoming and coming to barre is an instant mood booster. IMG_3062-683x1024

How has barre impacted you? Barre has been such a benefit to my mental health as a way of dealing with stress, especially as a student. I always leave class feeling refreshed and grounded in the present. You can’t be stressed about other things when you’re focused on the movement and your breath!

What is the best “side effect” you have noticed from barre? Strengthening my core and improving my posture. You really do work your entire body, especially your core (!!) during those 60 minutes in class.

BAM YEG 2016

We would like to extend so much gratitude to our BBS community for supporting our Bust a Move fundraising and karma classes. The event was a huge success, raising over $330,200 for clinical trials and breast cancer research at the Cross Cancer Institute. And our Barre Body Studio raised $8636.17 in total! Thanks you  barrestars for your time and donations to create more moments for the people in our community facing breast cancer! We can hardly wait to shimmy and shake with you again next year #bamyeg! We also want to thank all of the amazing fitness leaders that worked us out on the event day: Blitz Conditioning, Prime Strength and Fitness, Joe Lomnicki + Bliss Yoga Spa, Philip Ndugga, and Ike Henry - the #yegfit community is certainly lucky to have fearless fitness leaders like these guys and gals! We had so much fun leading the participants through our own Barre Star Body Blast, 250 people pulsing and plie-ing! YES! Barre Favs: 5 Minute Meals

The first stop after any workout is typically the fridge ... we know the feeling. But after a killer barre burn, who has time to prep an entire meal!? So this week we are turning to your barretenders to share their favourite 5 minute, post-workout meals.

"Does Starbucks count? Just kidding, Greek yogurt with hemp seeds and chia seeds mixed in is my healthy go to." - Katharine

"This is a tough one for me because I am not very good at cooking. Maybe a little over 5 minutes but omelettes are usually my go to when I'm short on time. Mushrooms, spinach, red pepper, feta and salsa. And Crispy Minis to snack on while I'm cooking. Perfect combo." - Charlotte

"My go to 5 min meal post workout is a banana and chocolate milk or tuna salad and crackers with carrots on the side." - Erika

"Oatmeal is always my go to quick meal. You can top it with nuts, dried fruit or fresh chopped apple and it is sure to fill the stomach. There are so many places that you can buy oatmeal on the go too, and I just make sure they don’t mix in any sugar for me so I can add as much or as little as I want." - Kristin G

"Salsa and ANYTHING: Avocado, kale chips, peppers! I also love apples and peanut butter - I could probably eat that for every meal, everyday (and you think I'm kidding...) - Katarina

Afternoon of Indulgence

Save the date barre babes: Saturday, April 2nd is our second annual Afternoon of Indulgence. Mark it in your calendars because you don't want to miss this! Come by IMG_5049-768x512_copy1BBS Holland Plaza between 1:00pm and 4:00pm to pamper yourself, have some treats, and connect with the BBS community. We are beyond excited to host some of our favourite local artists, retailers and beauty talents. Feel Fabulous spa will be in studio doing mini-manicures/pedicures and chocolate hand or foot facials, you can also get tatted with authentic designs from Henna by Ang and Benefair will be setting up a pop up shop and selling their carefully curated collections. (pssst.. you can check out any of their websites by clicking on the name.) We will also be providing treats, drinks, and of course the warmest company.

It wouldn't be a true BBS party without a sweat sesh -  we will be running a special 60-minute Barre Body Themed: Bangin' Booty class led by Katharine and Katarina! Class will be from 12:00-1:00pm, open to anyone and complimentary with the purchase of your ticket to the event!

To send some love and well deserved indulgence to our New Year, New Me challengers, tickets to this event are free. Didn't participate in the challenge but still want to join in on the celebrations? We would love to have you! Ticket prices for non-challengers are $25 (that includes the bangin booty class). #WomanCrushWednesday - Instructor Spotlight: Jaime

IMG_5372-768x512 Why do you barre so hard?   I love barre because it is an energizing workout that never feels “routine” since and every class is slightly different. It also never gets to be too easy – the stronger you get, the more you can challenge your body. Each instructor brings their own personal flare to the class which makes it even more fun! I have noticed great improvement in my balance, flexibility*, and strength since I started. *I am still very inflexible…just MORE flexible than before.

What advice do you have for the barrestars in your class? If you are new to barre- don’t get discouraged. Keep coming and you will get the hang of it and you will see results. I find it takes 5-10 classes before you really understand how to hold your positions and perform the exercises properly. From there it just gets better!

What keeps you inspired and motivated?IMG_5818-683x1024 I have always been a fairly driven person so when I find something I like I definitely take it and run with it. Each and every time I take a class I am inspired by the strength and positivity of the barre tenders who are able to lead a class so elegantly while still pushing us to our limits. I am motivated to keep coming as I always feel great when I leave a class and over time see the results from the work I put in.

What other exercise do you love (in addition to barre) to keep your routine well rounded? I really love to run – especially in the summer time. It’s a great way to spend time outside and check out some of the awesome trails in Edmonton. I also like snowboarding and cross country skiing in the winter time.

What is the best “side effect” you have noticed from barre? I have never slept so well in my life since starting barre!

Fit, Bands, Stretch + Core, Blast – What’s your favorite and why? I love all the classes but I think blast is my favourite. I just love the addition of some extra cardio to keep your heart rate up throughout class. It adds that extra intensity without taking away from the essence of a barre class.

Favorite way to treat yourself? If I really need to unwind there is nothing better than a glass of wine, a good book, and a warm bubble bath J

What is your guilty pleasure/ pleasures? Those five cent candies from the convenience store- especially the ones with sour sugar on them!

Congratulations Challengers!

Congratulations challengers - you did it! Knocking out 30 classes in 45 days in not an easy task, so we want to extend a huge applause to our #barrebosses that crushed. this. challenge. We hope that through your 45 day journey, you felt stronger everyday, overcame challenging obstacles and of course, had a ton of fun in the process (because, we sure did!) You've got to admit that looking back, those 6ams and back-to-back classes, really was a HYPE way to kick 2016 off! The barre has definitely been raised this year, to say the least!

We have already heard quite a few testimonies from successful challengers, and its got us feeling all sorts of warm and fuzzys - we want to hear all about your journey too! Barre Favs: Cardio Workouts

As you all know, barre is a kick-ass workout with a special focus on developing and toning muscles. And while this is FANTASTIC for your body, we wont deny the importance of incorporating cardio exercise to keep your fitness routine well rounded. Did you know that the majority of barre method's do not include a cardio component into their classes? We think that cardio is incredibly important, so we add it into (almost) every class - we even offer Barre Blast for those of you who prefer a little extra.

So why do we think cardiovascular exercise is so important? It improves heart health, boosts your metabolism, improves recovery ability, promotes endurance and is crucial to weight loss. For these reasons, we think that cardio and barre go hand in hand and we will always advocate that it is important for our barrestars to seek alternative means of cardio on top of what we are dishing out at the barre. Especially because YEG has so many wonderful cardio-based fitness boutiques and a gorgeous river valley for outdoor adventures! Looking for some ideas? Here are a few of our favourites:

"Depends on the season...in the winter I love to go skating, and in the summer it's walking/running outside in the river valley." - Erin "

A couple of weekends ago my friends and I played a game of "Capture the Flag" but it was the adult version and the flags were beer.  It doesn't necessarily sound like cardio but I have never been so sore in my entire life. Must be from all the running in the snow. Anyways, it is my new favourite cardio, beats treadmill intervals any day. We are thinking of starting a league if anyone is interested.  ???? And if this doesn't count I also looooove playing squash, newest obsession (after barre of course). " - Charlotte

"I love a good Spin class.  Good music, a dark room and an inspiring leader." - Megan

"Chasing my son around and going for walks to the park is my biggest cardio outside of barre. He is really fast and is constantly in a hurry to get somewhere so I basically spend my evenings and weekends running after him everywhere he goes. " - Kristin G

"I'm all for the cardio machines at the gym! Because I have the attention span of a 5 year old and get bored easily, it's nice to have a variety of machines that I can hop back and forth between. This helps keep my cardio sessions longer than 15 minutes. When I am away (especially in Arizona), I love going for runs and hiking because a) the weather is beautiful - I am all about the sun and b) there are so many pretty things to look!" - Katarina

Form Friday: Chair

Chair pose is the pose you LOVE to hate in class. It burns, you shake, and it tones your thighs like none other. Keep these tips in mind when performing chair pose!

Start stepping in nice and close to the barre, with your hips almost touching the barre. Hips should be stacked over your ankles to start. Send your weight back through your heels and pull away from the barre, sitting down, as if into a chair. Press down through your heels to feel your hamstrings really engage. Your arms should be straight, your shoulders should be back and down and your chest open. This creates a great stretch across your chest and shoulders. Focus on opening the chest and driving the shoulders down. Lengthen through the crown of your head and pull your head into a neutral position. Your shoulders should be stacked right over your hips, (no bums sticking out!!) your tailbone should be slightly tucked, which means that your core is engaged throughout chair. Make sure your knees are stacked right over you ankles and your knees stay in line with your toes.

Once you’ve mastered this position with your heels down, you can shift your weight to the balls of your feet and lift your heels. This is a variation of chair targeting the quads more. Lift your heels as high as you can to challenge your quads and calves. Knowing all of these wonderful benefits won’t make chair any easier, but hopefully it helps motivate you to hold the pose longer, to push yourself deeper and deeper each time.

#WomanCrushWednesday - Barre Star Spotlight: Melanie & Ramona

 

Why do you barre so hard? 
Ramona: I barre hard because I just love it! It is a different type of workout than anything unspecified-17that I have done in the past years. It's better for me and the change is really good! I also love the studio and all the great ladies!

Melanie:It’s simple, barre is addictive. From that crazy shake n’ burn, to the incredibly motivating instructors, to the energy of the class format, to the friendships made, to sweating it out with my sister and barremates, to seeing my body transform from weak to strong…..the love for barre just gets deeper and deeper.  

How do you keep each other motivated and inspired?
Ramona: We really like to go to class together. Its fun!  We always plan the week out so that we can have a few classes together, for sure! In class, I feel like we also work harder because one is watching the other!!!

Melanie: There’s nothing like a little sisterly nagging to keep you going to barre class!  

How has barre impacted you?
Ramona: I feel so much better since I have started doing barre. It has been over a year now, I have lost weight and inches!! My posture is better too. My husband likes it!

Melanie:It has completely changed my life. For years I had a job that required a heavy travel schedule and long work hours. I was chronically tired, I ate poorly, and I had no energy or motivation to even humor a fitness schedule. Then the travel ended, that half-packed suitcase was put away and for the first time I had “time”. Time to spend with my family, time to focus on healthy eating, and time to get into shape. Ramona had always said that it would be fun to do boot camps together but I was always on the road. Then there was that fateful day in November 2014. Ramona and I were out-and-about together, drove by the studio, and decided to check it out. We walked in and met the lovely Elissa, signed up for the two week unlimited trial and the rest is history  

How is working out with a partner different than working out alone?
Ramona: I don't mind working out alone but it is more fun with a partner. You work harder and are much more motivated. Even if Melanie is not in class with me, a few of my new barre friends always are!!

Melanie: I have realized that I thrive on working out “with” people, sharing in the experience together, sweating it out together. What could be more fun than working out with your Big Sis and BFF? Not only did I gain a great workout partner with my sister, but I gained an amazing workout family at Barre Body Studio. During class we all motivate and encourage each other, and that makes for a great workout! I am so grateful to all at Barre Body Studio!  

Where can we most likely find you after class?
Ramona: Well, if Melanie and I are in class together its trouble. We often end up shopping at Southgate, Winners or the Italian Centre after!

Melanie:Out walking my dog, Wolfgang, in the river valley, spending time with my family, or cooking with my hubby and pondering on how that bottle of wine went down so quickly!   unspecified-16-768x512

What is your favourite move at the barre?
Ramona: My favorite move is first position plie. It makes me feel like I am (kind of) a dancer!

Melanie:Plank variations and mountain climbers!  

If you had to choose 3 words to describe your sister, what would they be and why?
Ramona: Confident- being 5"11 helps Fun - She always likes to get out there and do things, new adventures, laugh! Compassionate - It is the nurse in her, taking care of her family when needed is    very important to her. We can always count on her too. I love my little sister!

Melanie:  (Best) Friend – Ramona is my big sister and best friend. In our adult years we have become very close. She is my bestie, my confidante, my dear, sweet sister that I would do anything for. Beautiful – Inside and out! (Always) Present – Ramona is a big part of my life. She is always there for me and has always been there for me over the years. For 17 years I lived in the United States, I missed home terribly, and even though I lived so far away I always felt close and connected to my big sister.
